The older my kids get, the less we’re able to “just hang out and relax” while on vacation (unless we’re on a pristine beach somewhere exotic!). Everyone is happiest when we keep these active kids moving!
Can your family relate? My family travel clients certainly can! Over the past few months my clients have hiked in Hawaii, discovered Mayan ruins in Guatemala, surfed in Central America and helped replant coral gardens in the South Pacific (just to name a few adventures!)
So when my family had a few free days of our Spring Break week open, I started looking for a fun, new adventure we could have together near our home in Denver. The answer – learning to nordic ski at Devils Thumb Ranch! Here’s why Devil’s Thumb Ranch offers the best family Nordic skiing in Colorado.
Easy Access from Denver
Located only about a 1.5 hour drive from the Denver International Airport, you can get here quickly – yet the ranch feels blissfully remote and secluded in the Rocky Mountains. The drive is only a small portion up I-70, the most congested route to the mountains, then you break off to head over Berthod Pass and into Winter Park.
Range of Accommodation Options
Devils Thumb Ranch offers “standard” hotel room configurations (King or 2 Queen Beds) as well as cabins that offer a range of bedroom configurations, some with full kitchens as well. And particularly in the winter months, room nights are very affordable.
Guests of Devils Thumb Ranch have access to a fun indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub, complimentary twice daily yoga, adorable s’mores kits that can be used at fire pits around the property, and a movie and game room area in the main lodge.
And the Nordic skiing!
Of course the skiing!
Shortly after we arrived, I began to realize what an in-demand destination Devils Thumb Ranch is for avid Nordic skiers. The trail system is massive, well marked and meticulously maintained. The pro shop offers rental nordic ski gear and the team is efficient in getting the family set up and out the door in just a few minutes.
We opted not to take a lesson, rather packed a backpack with plenty of food and water and set off for the day. The trails are marked in the same way as a downhill ski resort – green runs are the easiest, blues are a bit more challenging, and blacks are technical and for experts only. We started on the greens of course, the kids were falling all over the place, but quickly progressed up to the blues, which involved some climbing in places. At the top of the hill, we found a perfect lunch spot and refused before hitting the trails again. Such a fun way to spend a bluebird winter day together experiencing the best family Nordic skiing in Colorado!
The Ranch isn’t only for winter…
I also wanted to mention that beginning on June 1, 2019, the ranch is introducing an new all inclusive pricing plan. This will making it easier than ever to just show up and experience the ranch to the fullest. Pricing includes lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks in the coffee shop, and unlimited activities. During the summer months, some of the daily activities include;
- Nature Hikes
- Zip Line
- Fly Fishing
- Horseback Riding
- Guided Mountain Biking
- SUP on the Lake
- Wagon Rides
- Heated outdoor pool area (year round!)
- Live Music
- S’mores every night
And if you’re in the area do not miss an opportunity to have dinner at the Tabernash Tavern – one of the best, most innovative, meals we’ve had in Colorado!
