I live and breathe family travel. I spend my days speaking with the world’s best travel brands, so you can believe me when I say there are more opportunities than ever before for families to plan and book awesome travel experiences.
Never before have I seen more travel companies doubling down on family travelers.
So what does this mean for you? Your family can do and experience the world like never before.
Now, instead of passively observing the world while traveling, kids and adults alike are drawn into destinations by family-focused guides, tours that engage kids and accommodations that combine comfort and sense of place.
Read on for some serious family vacation inspiration.

Central Vermont features charming towns, rolling hills and a vibrant green country landscape, and plenty of lakes and rivers to explore. Trek Travel’s Vermont family vacation combines excellent cycling, delicious cuisine and creates a special atmosphere for families to bond over a little adventure.
Sweden’s JamtlaNd Harjedalen for Family Foodies
You might not be able to pronounce it, but in this region of Sweden kids can run freely around in the mountains while helping foodie parents collect mushrooms, berries and wild herbs. Think craft beer, artesian food and fresh mountain air in Jamtland Harjedalen. Perfection.
Summer in Colorado! Better than Winter?
While we all know about the magic of family ski vacations during winter months, Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are arguably better in the summer than in the winter! If you’re family isn’t into skiing, consider a mountain vacation during the summer months.
Colorado’s mountain towns are full of music festivals, blue skies and happy people loving life wandering around the mountains. Learn more here.

From exploring volcanoes to learning to surf, Nicaragua offers plenty of fun, unique things for families to do. And it won’t cost you nearly as much as neighboring Costa Rica or even other Caribbean destinations.
One-of-a-Kind Cultural Experience in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the most intriguing destinations to which I’ve ever traveled. With a truly unique culture, never having been colonized by Europe, rich history and beautiful landscapes, Ethiopia should be on every traveler’s bucket list.
However, historically, traveling in Ethiopia has been challenging. The level of accommodations in the country can best be described as “basic” and while Ethiopian cuisine is delicious, it’s difficult for anyone, let alone kids, to eat this day in and day out for an extended period of time.
I’m excited to hear that Jacaranda Tours, a local Ethiopian tour company, is in the process of building their own properties around the country. Stay tuned for more as those launch, and consider visiting Ethiopia in the next year or two!
Book an Un-Cruise
Not all cruises are created equal.
Instead of massive buffets and canned entertainment about a mega-cruise ship, enjoy snorkeling in UNESCO world heritage sites, interpretive presentations on board and ashore by a knowledgeable expedition team on an Un-Cruise. There are never more than 64 passengers on board the ship at any one time.
Consider this small ship sailing of the Galapagos, with an optional extension to Peru’s Machu Pichu.
Plan Egypt and Avoid the Crowds
Unrest in Egypt has resulted in a dramatic fall in tourist numbers. But the destination is still safe, and if you go now you’ll have the best sights all to yourself.
Here, kids love strolling through the colorful and vibrant streets, checking out the markets as much as visiting the amazing antiquities. Cross Country Tours offers a range of customized, family-friendly tours in Egypt.
Kids Love Seeing Polar Bears in Canada
What kid doesn’t get excited about wildlife? Head to Churchill, Canada for an up-close-and-personal look at these beautiful creatures. Prime viewing times are in October and November, when the bears begin their move from their summer habitat on the tundra back to seal-hunting territory on the Hudson Bay.
All-inclusive family packages from Frontiers North Adventures feature the unique wildlife and landscape of Churchill.
Discover Blueberries in Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean
Located near Canada’s Quebec City, Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean combines a fjord, massive lake and plenty of outdoor adventure for the whole family.
Don’t miss the annual six-mile-long Main Street feast at the Traversée Internationale du Lac Saint-Jean; in August-September, the harvest is musically celebrated at the Festival du Bleuet. Blueberries are a local specialty, and you can expect to find them in all forms in this area.
Unplug in Estes Park Colorado
While Denver-ites and other front range Colorado residents flock here to view the fall colors and the Elk Rut in early fall each year, Estes Park is becoming a true year-round destination.
Book a nostalgic mountain resort cabin or a modern condo on the riverfront and enjoy some time in Colorado’s wilderness with your family. Estes Park is easy to access and tends to be extremely affordable compered to other mountain destinations.
Walk the Inca Trail in Peru
Explore sites like Machu Picchu, The Sacred Valley, The Inca Trail, Lake Titicaca and other monuments and ruins important to the Peruvian culture and people with family-friendly ROW Adventures. Local guides accompany your family every step of the way, offering an immersive, yet well-coordinated experience.
ROW Adventures offers an excellent family itinerary to Peru, check it out here.
Get Active in the Dolomites
Escape the crowded tourist trails in some parts of Italy, and head to the Dolomites for a unique Italian travel experience. These stunning peaks have drawn foreign mountaineers for centuries, yet somehow they remain one of Italy’s best kept secrets. Here, kids love exploring the mountains and parents love the world-class cuisine and luxe hotels.
