Where to go While the Kids are at Summer Camp

Ahhh January – the time of year where parents across the country get busy pouring over the calendar for the upcoming year and making plans. For many families, this includes signing up for sleep away summer camp for the kids. My own kids have been enjoying sleep away camp for many years now – I honestly can’t think of anything better for kids than totally screen-free weeks, getting dirty in nature, and making new friends.

And of course, as parents we also enjoy having a few kid-free weeks! Here are my top picks for where to go while the kids are at summer camp.

Southern California

Southern California is at it’s best during the summer months and Santa Barbara in particular has everything you could want; beaches, wineries, dining, shopping and miles of hiking and biking trails. Here, the Hotel Californian is the quintessential California resort – complete with Spanish Colonial revival architecture (the hotel was originally built in 1925), rooftop pool, and stunning views of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

Or consider heading further south to San Diego. Here the Pendry is the perfect home base. Again they have a cool pool scene, walking distance to all the dining and bars, and right in the heart of everything that the city has to offer.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Los Cabos is also a great destination if you’re trying to decide where to go while the kids are at summer camp. The Cape is a fun, new hotel with a lively pool scene. The Pedregal is a lovely, refined option, and Los Marquis is a luxury all inclusive option in the area.

There is plenty to do here as well, beside pool lounging of course! Organize a catamaran excursion, try deep sea fishing, or head inland for a little sunrise hiking and biking (before it gets too hot).

Santa Fe, New Mexico

There is something special about the high-desert climate of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Here you can explore ancient ruins, hike through national parks, soak in natural hot springs, and of course dig into the thriving art and culinary scene.

Here I love the Four Seasons and  Rosewood properties. Both ideal for parents-only getaway.

While it may sound exotic, Belize is super accessible with direct flights from cities around the United States. Then hop on a quick puddle jumper flight down to Placencia for a few days at Turtle Inn.

One of the Francis Ford Coppola properties, Turtle Inn always shines with amazing food, wine and service without being pretentious. Relax on the beach, or book a boat, Belize is best explored by water. Here you can snorkel, fish, and spend the afternoons relaxing on private islands that dot the coastline.

And as always, my travel agency has a preferred relationship with each the properties mentioned here so you will enjoy plenty of complimentary perks and amenities such as free breakfast daily, room upgrades, and resort and spa credits to be used on site.
